There’s nothing like a grudge match. Football rivalries in the UK are no joke – we're talking passion, fierce competition, and enough drama to make a soap opera blush. If the tension gets too much to handle, save yourself from getting all out of sorts and bite a Snickers instead of your nails. You’ll thank us later. Strap in and we’ll run through some of the UK’s biggest football feuds. In no particular order, by the way. We like to keep a level playing field. Wink.
Manchester City vs. Manchester United
Two clubs, same city. The Manchester Derby has only gotten more intense over the last few years. Overall, Manchester United has the most wins – but they don’t consider Manchester City their biggest rivals.
Manchester United vs. Liverpool
The North West Derby is one of the oldest in the world. The clubs are two of the most successful in the Premier League. And since they’ve been pretty evenly matched, it makes this derby extra fierce.
Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur
A classic rivalry of proximity. The North London Derby really kicked off when Arsenal moved stadiums into Tottenham’s territory. It’s been a fight for bragging rights ever since.
Swansea vs. Cardiff
Wales’s most intense feud. If we’re talking skill, Swansea and Cardiff are just about level. Which makes the South Wales Derby even more bitter.
Everton vs. Liverpool
What started out as the ‘friendly derby’ is now the Merseyside Derby – and it hasn’t been friendly for a while. More red cards have been handed out in this derby than any other.
Rangers vs. Celtics
This rivalry runs deep. Fuelled by religion, a long-standing history, and local pride, Scotland’s top teams are known for fiery matches in the Old Firm Derby.
Millwall vs. West Ham United
If there’s one derby that gets heated, it’s this one. Both teams consider each other their number one rival, so these matches are anything but friendly. We’re talking pitch invasions and brutal fights between players and fans. It’s never pretty.
Chelsea vs. Arsenal
These teams haven’t been each other’s main rivals, but that doesn’t mean these London Derby matches don’t get heated. Arsenal has had more wins over the years, but lately Chelsea has been well on top of their game. We’re expecting some fierce matches to come.
If you need us, we’ll be in front of the telly waiting for the action. And if it’s your team’s derby next, keep your cool and don’t get all out of sorts. But do keep a chocolate bar on hand. Just in case.
